writing conferences and events
Lori Mortensen speaks at all sorts of writing events including book signings, story times, festivals, and fundraisers. In 2015, she was a featured author at the Sacramento Library Foundation's Author on the Move Fundraiser with such notables as Lemony Snicket's Daniel Handler and NPR's Beth Ruyak and has also appeared multiple times at ScholarShare Children's Book Festival at Fairytale Town in Sacramento.
SCBWI events have included Beyond the Bay, nonfiction intensives, panel discussions, and presenting SCBWI NorCal's day-long "Intensive Squared: Picture Book Intensive" featuring five sessions on the craft of writing picture books. In addition to the day-long picture book intensive, she offers PowerPoint presentations on "The Stories Behind the Stories," "Rhyme in Picture Books," and "The Secret of Picture Book Biographies." Contact her for rates and availability.
PowerPoint assemblies - Her PowerPoint presentation "The Story Behind the Stories" features her unlikely writing journey--her sister was the storyteller, not her!--and the stories behind several of her most popular titles including, In the Trees, Honey Bees!, Cindy Moo, and Cowpoke Clyde and Dirty Dawg. During the 45-minute presentation, she'll share her father-in-law's beekeeping suit and veil, a real cow bell just like Cindy Moo's, and discuss how she turned ideas into stories. Her visit includes time for Q&As and signing books. See her author visit brochure for full details and her tips for having a successful author visit.
Local classroom visits - Lori also visits local classrooms for 45 minutes where she'll read several of her stories, discuss the stories behind the stories, and the publishing process.
Skype visits - Lori also gives 30-minute Skype visits where she'll read several of her most popular stories, discuss how each story began with an idea, and story structure that includes a main character, a story problem, the struggle, and that satisfying twist at the end.
These titles and others are accompanied by downloadable classroom activities that explore common core themes such as art, character, geography, history health, language arts, mathematics, research, and social studies. Access her activity guides HERE.
Each PowerPoint presentation costs $500. Presentations outside of the Sacramento area may include travel, lodging and transportation expenses. She charges $300 for local classroom and Skype visits. Contact her for more information about advance book order forms and scheduling.
