Welcome!

Welcome to my website!

It's the only place that the cats can't scratch, the kids can't clutter, and the books never needs dusting. How great is that? But more importantly, it's a place where you're invited to sit down, put up your feet, and learn about my world and the books I write.

I love reading and writing. When I'm not shuttling my teens around or escorting my three cats in or out (how did they wrangle that deal?) I'm usually at my computer plunking away at my latest project. The result of all this typing has been selling fiction and nonfiction to magazines and book publishers alike. Magazine credits include Highlights for Children, Ladybug, The Friend, KNOW, Wild Outdoor World, and many others.  I've also published fiction and nonfiction with Picture Window Books, KidHaven Press, and projects with Trillium Press for a variety of educational publishers. I'm especially pleased about my recent sales to Tricycle Press and Clarion and look forward to release dates in 2009 and 2010.

My favorite projects? Read-it readers, biographies, and nonfiction on all sorts of subjects. When I write fiction, I create new worlds peopled by characters I create. After plunging the main character into trouble, I've got to find a way to get him or her out. When I write nonfiction I feel as if I'm on a treasure hunt. I never know what exciting bits of information I'll uncover that will stir my imagination and the imaginations of young readers as well. Click on links to learn more about me, my books, and my work as a writing instructor at the Institute of Children's Literature
